Every Razorsaw on Ojisan Tools, and the Ōuchi chisel set, comes from one house in Miki, Hyogo. Gyokucho Sangyo develops and sells the saws. Its sister company, Razorsaw Manufacturing in nearby Ono, makes the blades. And its Miki Kajiya Mura division brings the hand-forging smiths of Miki to tool users around the world.
1969
Japan's first replaceable-blade saw
In 1969 the group's founder established Razorsaw Manufacturing Co., Ltd. and introduced the Razorsaw, the first Japanese saw with a replaceable blade. Instead of sending a dull saw out for sharpening, a carpenter swaps the blade in seconds and keeps working. The company still describes it in one line: the saw that changed the world of cutting.
Gyokucho Sangyo followed in 1975 as the sales company, working with the factory on product development and taking the saws to carpenters across Japan and, later, overseas. A Tokyo office opened in 2011. The company is run today by the second generation of the founding family.
Look for the Gyokucho mark and the words RAZORSAW JAPAN etched on every blade.
Miki, Hyogo
A blacksmith town
Miki has forged tools for centuries. Its hand-forged saws, chisels, planes, trowels and knives are recognized by the Japanese government as a traditional craft, Banshu Miki Uchihamono, and the town remains one of the country's centers for carpentry tools.
Gyokucho's Miki Kajiya Mura division (みきかじや村, "Miki blacksmith village") opened in 2006 to connect the town's independent smiths with tool users who want, in its own words, the ultimate tool matched to themselves. A tool shop opened at the company's headquarters in 2017, where visitors handle the tools and bring them back for maintenance.
The Ōuchi chisel set on Ojisan Tools is supplied through Miki Kajiya Mura. Its motto, 炎と鎚に秘める想い, the feeling hidden in flame and hammer, is a fair description of the work.
